Director & Operations Manager
Nancylia
Director & Operations Manager | Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy
Nancylia Lia, known as Nancy, is Director and Operations Manager of Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy, with responsibility across the organisation’s clinical, therapeutic and operational services. Her role is central to how Empowering Awareness functions. Nancy oversees the people, schedules, systems and day-to-day coordination that allow counselling, psychological services, clinical support and related programmes to operate smoothly and professionally. She is also Director and Operations Manager across Pesona Jiwa, which forms part of the wider Empowering Awareness organisation. This gives Nancy responsibility across both outpatient counselling and psychological services and the more intensive residential support delivered through Pesona Jiwa. Her position is not simply administrative. She helps hold together the practical structure behind the clinical work. Without that structure, the therapists cannot focus fully on therapy, the clients do not experience continuity, and the organisation cannot operate effectively.Director Across Empowering Awareness
As a Director of Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy, Nancy is involved in the leadership and ongoing development of the organisation. She works closely with the clinical team, counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists and wider support staff to ensure that services remain coordinated, responsive and consistent. Her responsibilities include overseeing:- operational systems
- staff and practitioner coordination
- client scheduling
- therapist availability
- service delivery
- internal communication
- administrative processes
- organisational planning
- client support requirements
- continuity across Empowering Awareness and Pesona Jiwa
The Operational Heart of the Organisation
Nancy is, in many ways, the operational heart of Empowering Awareness. Clinical work depends on much more than the session itself. Appointments need coordinating. Practitioners need scheduling. Clients need clear communication. Changes need managing. Records and systems need maintaining. Problems need resolving. Someone has to keep an overview of all of it. Nancy does. She is known for her calm manner, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities without allowing the complexity behind the scenes to become the client’s problem. That is one of the most important parts of her role. Clients should feel supported. Not managed. Therapists should be able to focus on their clinical work. Not on operational confusion. Nancy creates the structure that allows both to happen.Coordinating the Clinical and Therapeutic Team
One of Nancy’s core responsibilities is the coordination of the treating team. Depending on the service, that can involve:- psychologists
- psychotherapists
- counsellors
- addiction specialists
- psychiatrists
- medical practitioners
- interns
- supervisors
- nervous-system-focused practitioners
- other therapeutic professionals
Supporting the Client Journey
Nancy’s involvement is not limited to what happens behind the scenes. She is also closely connected with the practical side of the client journey. From initial scheduling through to ongoing appointments, changes in availability, referrals and wider support needs, Nancy helps make the process feel clear and manageable. For clients seeking mental-health support, this can matter enormously. Reaching out for counselling or psychological care can already feel difficult. The last thing someone needs is uncertainty around appointments, communication or who they are supposed to speak to. Nancy helps create clarity. She makes sure the practical side of care supports the therapeutic side rather than getting in the way of it.Connecting Empowering Awareness and Pesona Jiwa
Nancy also plays a key role in connecting Empowering Awareness with Pesona Jiwa, the organisation’s private residential retreat service. Her leadership spans both. This is important because the two services operate at different levels of intensity but share the same wider clinical foundation. A client may begin with counselling through Empowering Awareness. Another may require more intensive support. A Pesona Jiwa guest may need continued counselling or psychological support after returning home. Nancy understands both sides of that pathway. She helps maintain continuity between the two rather than treating them as completely separate organisations.A Calm and Practical Leadership Style
Nancy’s leadership style is practical, steady and solution-focused. She does not need to make noise to be effective. When something changes, she responds. When a problem appears, she works through it. When schedules need rearranging, she coordinates them. When a client needs something clarified, she helps resolve it. That reliability has made her one of the people the wider team depends on most. Behind almost every well-organised clinical service is someone making sure the structure remains intact. At Empowering Awareness, that person is very often Nancy.Indonesian Leadership at the Centre
Nancy’s position is also important in representing the Indonesian leadership of Empowering Awareness. The organisation works with both Indonesian and international clients, but it is rooted in Indonesia. Nancy is a Director of that organisation. Her leadership supports the wider Indonesian clinical and therapeutic team and helps ensure that the company remains locally grounded while providing services that are accessible to international clients. This balance is important. Empowering Awareness is not simply bringing Western therapeutic models into Indonesia. It is an Indonesian-led organisation integrating internationally recognised psychological approaches with local professional expertise and cultural understanding. Nancy is central to that structure.More Than Operations
It would be easy to describe Nancy’s role as purely operational. That would not reflect what she actually contributes. She is involved in: Leadership. Coordination. Problem solving. Team communication. Client support. Service continuity. Organisational development. And the day-to-day decisions that allow the company to function effectively. She is one of the people holding the wider picture. That matters because clinical excellence is not only about having good therapists. It also depends on having an organisation that allows those therapists to work effectively. Nancy helps make that possible. Why Nancy’s Role Matters
There would be no Empowering Awareness in its current form without Nancy. She helps hold together the clinical, operational and organisational sides of the company. The therapists rely on her. The wider team relies on her. The systems rely on her. And clients benefit from the structure she creates, even when they never see everything happening behind the scenes. She is:- Director of Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy
- Operations Manager across the wider organisation
- Director and Operations Manager of Pesona Jiwa
- coordinator of therapists and practitioners
- organiser of client and treatment schedules
- a central link between clinical and operational teams
- a problem solver
- a leader
- one of the people most responsible for the smooth delivery of services
Nancy at Empowering Awareness
Nancy’s role touches almost every part of Empowering Awareness. She oversees:- company operations
- therapist and practitioner coordination
- client scheduling
- internal systems
- service delivery
- operational quality
- client support processes
- communication across the multidisciplinary team
- coordination with Pesona Jiwa
- the practical details that allow the organisation to function consistently
Our Connection With Pesona Jiwa
Nancy also holds the same senior operational leadership role across Pesona Jiwa, the private residential retreat arm of Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy.
Pesona Jiwa provides highly individualised support for people seeking more intensive help with trauma, burnout, nervous-system dysregulation, addiction recovery and wider psychological or emotional difficulties. The retreat works with one guest at a time, allowing care to be shaped around the individual rather than a fixed group programme.
Nancy helps connect the two organisations operationally, ensuring continuity between outpatient counselling and psychological support through Empowering Awareness and more intensive residential care through Pesona Jiwa. Her oversight spans the treating team, schedules, guest requirements, logistics and the wider coordination needed to make both services work together smoothly.
You can learn more about Pesona Jiwa’s private retreats, explore the Trauma Healing Retreat, or read about the 28-Day taVNS Intensive Healing Retreat.
Nancy is one of the foundations the organisation is built on.

When people understand themselves more clearly, they become better equipped to respond differently, make healthier decisions, strengthen relationships, improve wellbeing, and create meaningful change. His work is not centred on fixing people because he does not view people as broken. Instead, he helps individuals understand the patterns, adaptations, beliefs, and behaviours that have developed throughout their lives, recognise the purpose those patterns once served, and explore new ways of moving forward with greater awareness, resilience, and self-understanding. Through Empowering Awareness, Matt's mission is to make psychological knowledge accessible, practical, and empowering for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the human experience.

Agnes Nugrawati Salim, M.Psi., Psikolog
Head Clinical Psychologist | Adult Clinical Psychology | Psychological Counselling | ACT | taVNS | Art Therapy
Agnes Nugrawati Salim, M.Psi., Psikolog is the Head Clinical Psychologist at Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy and a licensed Indonesian psychologist specialising in adult clinical psychology. Agnes brings extensive experience working with both Indonesian and international clients, including individuals from Western backgrounds, and is highly experienced in adapting psychological care to different cultural, relational and personal contexts. She is fluent in Indonesian and English and also speaks Mandarin, allowing her to work comfortably with clients from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Her clinical work includes psychological counselling and therapy for people experiencing anxiety, depression, addiction, emotional dysregulation, personality-related difficulties, trauma, relational problems, low self-esteem, chronic stress, burnout and wider emotional or behavioural concerns. Agnes also integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, art-based therapeutic work and nervous-system-focused approaches including transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) where appropriate. Her work is grounded in the belief that people should never be reduced to a diagnosis. Every person arrives with a different history. Different relationships. Different coping strategies. Different strengths. Different reasons for struggling. For Agnes, effective psychological care begins with understanding the person behind the symptoms.A Licensed Indonesian Clinical Psychologist
Agnes completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology before progressing to a Master’s Degree and Professional Qualification in Adult Clinical Psychology. Her professional training developed her expertise in assessing and supporting adults experiencing a broad range of psychological, emotional, behavioural and relational difficulties. As an Indonesian Psikolog, Agnes brings formal professional psychological training into the clinical leadership of Empowering Awareness. She also holds the same senior role as Head Clinical Psychologist at our sister organisation, Pesona Jiwa, strengthening clinical continuity across both organisations. Her dual role means she contributes both to ongoing psychological counselling and to more intensive, multidisciplinary mental-health support when this is appropriate.Psychological Counselling and Therapy
Agnes works directly with clients through individual psychological counselling and therapeutic sessions. Her approach is warm, collaborative and highly individualised. Rather than expecting every client to respond to the same therapeutic model, Agnes adapts her work according to the person’s needs, psychological history, current circumstances and readiness for change. Her work may involve exploring:- anxiety and chronic worry
- depression and low mood
- addiction and problematic coping behaviours
- personality-related difficulties
- trauma and difficult life experiences
- emotional regulation
- relationship and attachment difficulties
- low self-esteem
- identity and self-worth
- chronic stress and burnout
- emotional numbness and disconnection
- grief and loss
- life transitions
- family difficulties
- patterns of avoidance or self-sabotage
- difficulties expressing or understanding emotions
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
One of the approaches Agnes incorporates into her work is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT can be especially useful for people who have spent a great deal of time fighting their own internal experience. Trying not to feel anxious. Trying not to think certain thoughts. Trying to control uncertainty. Trying to avoid emotional discomfort. These attempts can sometimes become part of the problem. ACT helps people develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings. The aim is not to eliminate every uncomfortable internal experience. It is to develop greater psychological flexibility. To notice what is happening without automatically being controlled by it. And to begin making choices that are more closely aligned with personal values, even when difficult emotions are present. For Agnes, this fits naturally with a wider therapeutic philosophy centred on resilience, self-awareness and meaningful change.Mindfulness and Emotional Awareness
Agnes also incorporates mindfulness-based approaches where appropriate. Mindfulness is not simply about becoming calm. It can help people develop greater awareness of thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behavioural patterns as they occur. This can create an important pause between experience and reaction. For example, a person may begin recognising: “I am becoming anxious.” “I am starting to withdraw.” “I am assuming the worst.” “I am feeling rejected.” “I want to react, but I have another choice.” That awareness can be especially valuable for people who have spent years operating automatically in response to stress, trauma or difficult relationships. The goal is not to remove emotion. It is to develop a more flexible relationship with it.Motivational Interviewing
Agnes also uses Motivational Interviewing in her clinical work. This approach can be particularly helpful where someone feels ambivalent about change. A person may understand intellectually that something needs to change while another part of them remains attached to the familiar behaviour. This is common in addiction. But it also appears in relationships. Work. Health. Self-care. Boundaries. And many other areas of psychological life. Rather than telling someone what they should do, Motivational Interviewing helps explore the person’s own values, motivations and reasons for change. This matters because sustainable change is rarely created by instruction alone. People are more likely to maintain change when they understand why it matters to them.Addiction and Behavioural Change
Agnes has considerable experience working with people affected by addiction and problematic coping behaviours. Addiction is rarely only about the substance or behaviour itself. Alcohol, drugs, food, work, relationships and other behaviours may all become ways of regulating difficult internal states. Anxiety. Trauma. Shame. Loneliness. Stress. Emotional numbness. Painful memories. A sense of not being enough. For this reason, Agnes’s work looks beyond the behaviour. She helps clients understand: What state am I trying to change? What happens before I use this coping strategy? What does the behaviour provide temporarily? What does it cost me over time? What other forms of regulation or support might become possible? This approach fits closely with Empowering Awareness’s wider work around counselling, psychotherapy, addiction recovery and behavioural change.Trauma-Informed Psychological Support
Agnes also works with people affected by trauma and difficult life experiences. Trauma does not always present as obvious flashbacks or panic. It may appear as: Hypervigilance. Emotional numbness. People-pleasing. Perfectionism. Relationship difficulties. Difficulty trusting. Fear of abandonment. Avoidance. Overworking. The inability to rest. A persistent sense of danger despite being physically safe. Trauma-informed work needs to be paced carefully. The aim is not to force someone to repeatedly revisit painful material before they have enough capacity to tolerate it. Safety, trust and therapeutic relationship matter. Sometimes the first stage of trauma work is simply helping the person recognise: “This response developed for a reason.” Understanding can reduce shame and create a more compassionate starting point for change.Integrating taVNS Into Psychological Work
Agnes also incorporates transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) within her work where clinically appropriate. taVNS is a non-invasive neuromodulation approach that applies mild electrical stimulation through specific areas of the external ear associated with sensory innervation from the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. At Empowering Awareness, this is not treated as a replacement for psychological counselling or psychotherapy. It is one potential support within a wider therapeutic process. This distinction matters. Technology cannot process grief. It cannot set a boundary. It cannot change an unhealthy relationship. It cannot understand someone’s history. Psychological therapy remains central. But physiological support may sometimes help a person become more able to remain present, regulate internal activation and engage with psychological work. Because Agnes works across both psychological therapy and nervous-system-focused interventions, she is able to integrate these areas rather than treating the mind and body as entirely separate.Art Therapy and Creative Therapeutic Work
Agnes also uses art-based therapeutic approaches where appropriate. For some people, words are not always the easiest starting point. A person may know that something is wrong but struggle to explain it. They may have spent years intellectualising difficult experiences. Or certain emotions may simply be easier to express through image, colour, symbol or form. Art-based therapeutic work provides another route into the person’s experience. It is not about artistic skill. There is no requirement to draw well. The value lies in expression. This can be particularly useful when working with:- trauma
- grief
- identity
- emotional numbness
- anxiety
- difficult relationships
- transitions
- experiences that are difficult to verbalise
Working With Indonesian and International Clients
One of Agnes’s particular strengths is her extensive experience working with both Indonesian and Western clients. Psychological care is never entirely separate from culture. The way people understand distress differs. The role of family differs. Ideas about independence, responsibility, emotional expression, success, relationships and mental health can all vary significantly across cultures. A therapeutic approach developed in one cultural setting should not automatically be imposed on everyone in exactly the same way. Agnes is able to work comfortably across these different contexts. Her fluency in Indonesian and English allows her to work naturally with both local and international clients. Her ability to speak Mandarin further broadens that accessibility. For international clients, this means receiving professional psychological support from someone who is experienced in communicating across cultures rather than assuming that every client will understand therapy in the same way. For Indonesian clients, it means working with a psychologist who understands the cultural, family and social context around their experiences. That balance is particularly important within Empowering Awareness, where our client base is both Indonesian and international.Professional Experience
Agnes has built her clinical experience across a range of psychological and community settings in Indonesia. Her professional background includes work with:Ohana Space
At Ohana Space, Agnes provided psychological support within a therapeutic environment focused on individual wellbeing and emotional development.Bagikan Ceritamu
Agnes also worked with Bagikan Ceritamu, contributing to a platform centred around creating space for people to share personal experiences and access psychological support.Government Social Service Department — West Java
Her professional experience also includes work with the Government Social Service Department in the West Java area. This provided experience addressing mental-health and psychosocial needs within a broader community and public-service setting. This aspect of Agnes’s career is important. Her experience has not been limited to one private-practice environment or one type of client. She has worked across private, community and public-sector contexts. That breadth contributes to the adaptable and grounded way she works today.Published Psychological Research
Agnes is also a published psychological researcher. Her academic work adds another important dimension to her professional profile. She is not only applying psychological knowledge clinically. She has contributed directly to psychological research within Indonesia. The Mediating Effect of Self-Esteem on the Association Between Minority Stress and Social Well-Being Among Indonesian Young Adult Gay Men and Lesbian Women
Agnes co-authored research examining the relationship between minority stress, self-esteem and social wellbeing among Indonesian young adults. The study explored how minority stress may affect social wellbeing and examined the mediating role of self-esteem. The work is particularly significant because it contributes to psychological research based specifically within an Indonesian population and cultural context. Published research: https://doi.org/10.24123/aipj.v39i1.5794 ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/377899597_The_Mediating_Effect_of_Self-Esteem_on_the_Association_Between_Minority_Stress_and_Social_Well-Being_Among_Indonesian_Young_Adult_Gay_Men_and_Lesbian_Women_Pengaruh_Mediasi_Self-Esteem_Terhadap_HubungPengaruh Psikoedukasi terhadap Pengetahuan Inklusivitas pada Anak-Anak di Yayasan Panti Asuhan Z
Agnes is also an author of research examining the impact of psychoeducation on children's knowledge and understanding of inclusivity within an Indonesian orphanage setting. This work reflects her experience not only in one-to-one psychological practice, but also in psychoeducation and community-based psychological intervention. Published research: https://doi.org/10.24912/psenapenmas.v0i0.15215 ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/356513607_PENGARUH_PSIKOEDUKASI_TERHADAP_PENGETAHUAN_INKLUSIVITAS_PADA_ANAK-ANAK_DI_YAYASAN_PANTI_ASUHAN_ZResearch Grounded in Indonesia
Agnes’s published research strengthens an important part of the clinical identity of Empowering Awareness. Much of the global psychological literature has historically been developed using Western populations. Yet psychological experience is influenced by: Culture. Family. Community. Identity. Social expectations. Stigma. Belonging. Agnes’s research contributes directly to psychological understanding within Indonesia. Her published work has addressed areas including:- minority stress
- self-esteem
- social wellbeing
- inclusivity
- psychoeducation
- stigma
- Indonesian social and cultural contexts
Head Clinical Psychologist at Empowering Awareness
As Head Clinical Psychologist, Agnes contributes to the clinical leadership and psychological direction of Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy. Her role extends beyond individual client sessions. She contributes to the quality and consistency of psychological care across the organisation and works collaboratively within the wider clinical team. She is also Head Clinical Psychologist at our sister organisation, Pesona Jiwa, creating continuity between ongoing outpatient psychological support and more intensive residential retreat care. This shared leadership role strengthens collaboration between the two organisations and helps ensure that clients can access different levels of support without losing the underlying clinical philosophy.A Multidisciplinary Approach
Psychological difficulties rarely fit neatly into one category. Anxiety can coexist with trauma. Burnout may involve depression. Addiction may function as emotional regulation. Relationship difficulties may connect with attachment and self-esteem. For this reason, Agnes works within a wider multidisciplinary framework. Where appropriate, care can involve collaboration with:- psychotherapists
- psychologists
- psychiatrists
- medical practitioners
- addiction specialists
- nervous-system-focused practitioners
- counsellors and therapists
- complementary therapeutic practitioners
Agnes’s Clinical Philosophy
At the centre of Agnes’s work is a belief that personal growth is not defined by a simple division between success and failure. People make progress. They struggle. They experience setbacks. They adapt. They begin again. For Agnes, resilience does not mean never falling. It means developing the ability to understand what happened, reconnect with existing strengths and continue moving forward. She works to create a therapeutic environment that feels welcoming, respectful and psychologically safe. A space where clients can speak honestly. Explore difficult experiences. Recognise patterns. Develop greater self-awareness. And begin identifying the resources they already possess. The psychologist is not there to dictate someone’s life. The role is to help the person understand themselves more clearly and make more informed choices.Helping Clients Recognise Their Own Capacity
One of Agnes’s core aims is to help people recognise that they often possess more internal resources than they realise. When someone has been anxious, depressed, addicted, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted for a long time, it becomes easy for the difficulty to become their identity. “I am an anxious person.” “I am broken.” “I always fail.” “I cannot change.” Psychological work can begin separating the person from the problem. The person has anxiety. They are not anxiety. They have developed coping patterns. Those patterns are not their entire identity. They have experienced setbacks. That does not mean they are incapable of growth. For Agnes, this shift is central to meaningful psychological care.Agnes at Empowering Awareness

Deta, M.A., Counsellor
Mental Health Counsellor
Deta, M.A., Counsellor
Mental Health Counsellor
Deta, M.A., Counsellor
Licensed Mental Health Counsellor | Educational Psychology | Trauma | CBT | ACT | Art Therapy
Sari Puteri Deta, M.A., Counsellor, known as Deta, is a Licensed Mental Health Counsellor at Empowering Awareness Counselling & Consultancy with more than four years of professional experience supporting clients through emotional, relational, academic, occupational and life-adjustment difficulties.
Deta works with adolescents and adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, workplace stress, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, identity concerns, low self-worth and major life transitions.
Her approach is warm, structured and collaborative.
Rather than relying on one therapeutic model, Deta draws from several evidence-informed approaches and adapts her work according to the individual in front of her.
Her therapeutic work includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma Processing Therapy and Art Therapy.
This allows her to work both practically and reflectively: helping clients understand what is happening, identify patterns, develop psychological flexibility and begin creating realistic changes in everyday life.
Education and Professional Qualifications
Deta holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
She previously completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychotherapy and Sufism at Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati, Bandung, Indonesia.
Her academic background gives her a distinctive perspective that brings together psychological theory, education, human development and therapeutic practice.
Deta also holds professional counsellor certification in Indonesia through the Badan Nasional Sertifikasi Profesi (BNSP).
Her qualifications include:
- Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology — Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta
- Bachelor’s Degree in Psychotherapy and Sufism — Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati, Bandung
- Professional Counsellor Certification Indonesia — Badan Nasional Sertifikasi Profesi (BNSP)
Areas of Clinical Focus
Deta works with clients experiencing a broad range of concerns, including:
- academic anxiety and performance-related stress
- workplace and career-related stress
- general stress and emotional difficulties
- grief and loss
- trauma and trauma-related concerns
- relationship and family difficulties
- attachment difficulties following separation or divorce
- adjustment to major life transitions
- self-esteem and self-worth concerns
- minority stress
- identity-related challenges
- sexual orientation and identity exploration
- emotional and interpersonal difficulties
- motivation and behavioural change
Her work recognises that these difficulties rarely exist in isolation.
Academic anxiety may be connected with perfectionism or fear of failure.
Workplace stress may be connected with boundaries, identity or chronic responsibility.
Relationship difficulties may reflect attachment patterns or previous experiences of loss.
Low self-worth can influence almost every area of a person’s life.
For Deta, counselling involves understanding these wider patterns rather than simply treating the most visible symptom.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Deta uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify the relationships between thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
CBT can be particularly useful where patterns of thinking have become rigid or self-reinforcing.
A person might repeatedly think:
“I am going to fail.”
“I am not good enough.”
“Everyone else is coping better than me.”
“If this relationship ends, I will not be okay.”
Those thoughts can influence emotion and behaviour, which can then reinforce the original belief.
Deta helps clients begin recognising these patterns and developing more balanced and useful ways of responding.
The aim is not forced positivity.
It is greater awareness and choice.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Deta also incorporates Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
This approach places greater emphasis on strengths, resources and practical movement towards change.
Sometimes people arrive in counselling knowing exactly what is wrong but feeling unable to identify what might help.
Solution-focused work can help shift attention towards:
What is already working?
When is the problem less intense?
What resources does the person already have?
What would a small but meaningful improvement look like?
This can be particularly useful where clients feel overwhelmed by the size of a problem and need realistic steps towards change.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is another important part of Deta’s approach.
People often feel conflicted about change.
One part of the person wants something different.
Another part feels safer with what is familiar.
This can occur with relationships, work, habits, health, substance use, study, boundaries and many other areas.
Rather than telling clients what they should do, Motivational Interviewing helps them explore their own values, motivations and readiness for change.
The goal is to help the client develop greater ownership of the decisions they make.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Deta also integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
ACT helps clients develop greater psychological flexibility rather than spending all of their energy attempting to control or avoid difficult internal experiences.
It can be particularly useful for people who become caught in cycles of:
Overthinking.
Avoidance.
Self-criticism.
Fear of uncertainty.
Emotional suppression.
Perfectionism.
ACT encourages greater awareness of thoughts and emotions while helping the person move towards actions that reflect what genuinely matters to them.
The aim is not to eliminate every uncomfortable emotion.
It is to build a life that is not controlled by them.
Trauma Processing
Deta also works with trauma and trauma-related difficulties.
Trauma does not always present as one obvious event.
Its impact can appear through anxiety, avoidance, relationship difficulties, mistrust, emotional dysregulation, low self-worth or difficulty feeling safe.
Deta uses trauma-processing approaches carefully and collaboratively.
The aim is not to force someone into painful material before they are ready.
Good trauma work depends on safety, trust and the person having enough capacity to remain engaged without becoming overwhelmed.
Her work supports clients in understanding how past experiences may continue to influence present emotional and behavioural patterns.
Art Therapy and Creative Expression
Deta also incorporates Art Therapy as another avenue for emotional exploration and communication.
For some people, words are not always the easiest starting point.
An emotion may be difficult to explain.
A memory may be hard to describe.
A client may understand something intellectually but struggle to connect with how it actually feels.
Creative expression can provide another way of approaching that material.
Art therapy is not about artistic ability.
The value lies in expression, reflection and meaning.
It can be particularly useful in work involving identity, trauma, grief, relationships and emotional awareness.
Academic Anxiety and Student Wellbeing
Deta’s background in Educational Psychology gives her particular insight into the pressures experienced by students and young adults.
Academic stress is not always simply about workload.
It can involve:
Fear of failure.
Perfectionism.
Family expectations.
Uncertainty about the future.
Comparison with peers.
Loss of motivation.
Identity.
Pressure to achieve.
Deta helps students understand both the practical and psychological dimensions of these experiences.
Her work can include strategies for anxiety, motivation and coping while also exploring the deeper beliefs that may be driving performance pressure.
Workplace and Career-Related Stress
Deta also works with clients experiencing workplace and career difficulties.
This can include:
Chronic stress.
Burnout.
Workplace conflict.
Loss of motivation.
Career uncertainty.
Difficulty setting boundaries.
Pressure to perform.
Feeling trapped in a role that no longer feels meaningful.
Work occupies a significant part of adult life, and difficulties in this area can affect relationships, sleep, confidence and overall wellbeing.
Counselling can create space to separate immediate workplace pressures from broader questions around identity, values and direction.
Grief and Loss
Grief is another important area of Deta’s work.
Loss does not only mean bereavement.
People may grieve:
The end of a relationship.
A divorce.
A friendship.
A career.
A sense of identity.
A future they expected to have.
A major life transition.
Deta supports clients in making space for grief without imposing a fixed timetable on how they should feel.
The goal is not forgetting.
It is finding a way to integrate what has happened while continuing to live.
Relationships, Separation and Attachment
Relationship difficulties can affect both emotional wellbeing and a person’s sense of self.
Deta works with clients experiencing conflict, separation, divorce and attachment-related concerns.
After a relationship ends, people may struggle with:
Rejection.
Abandonment.
Loss of identity.
Self-blame.
Trust.
Fear about future relationships.
Repeated relational patterns.
Therapy can help clients understand not only what happened in a particular relationship, but also how earlier experiences may shape expectations of closeness, security and connection.
Identity, Minority Stress and Sexual Orientation
Deta also supports clients exploring identity, sexual orientation and experiences of minority stress.
For some people, distress is not created by identity itself.
It can arise from stigma.
Discrimination.
Family expectations.
Social pressure.
Fear of rejection.
The need to conceal important parts of themselves.
This requires therapeutic work that is respectful, non-judgmental and sensitive to cultural and social context.
Deta provides space for clients to explore these concerns without being pushed towards a predetermined conclusion.
Published Academic and Scientific Work
Alongside her counselling practice, Deta has also contributed to academic and psychological research.
Her published and academic work reflects interests across subjective wellbeing, bipolar disorder, prosocial behaviour, gratitude, education, child development, empathy and the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This research background adds another dimension to her clinical work.
It demonstrates not only experience supporting clients directly, but sustained engagement with psychological theory, qualitative research and human development within an Indonesian context.
The Meaning of Subjective Well-Being Among University Students With Bipolar Disorder
Deta’s Master’s research examined the meaning of subjective wellbeing among university students living with bipolar disorder.
The study used a qualitative, phenomenological approach and explored how students understood wellbeing, how they developed it and the factors that influenced it.
The research found that subjective wellbeing was associated with themes including self-acceptance, self-love, emotional stability, achievement of personal goals and the fulfilment of social, biological, psychological and spiritual needs. It also highlighted the role of meaningful activities, supportive communities and cognitive problem-solving.
The thesis was completed at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in 2022.

This work is particularly relevant to Deta’s wider therapeutic perspective because it looks beyond diagnosis alone.
A diagnosis can describe part of someone’s experience.
It does not define the whole person.
The research explored how people living with bipolar disorder could still experience wellbeing, meaning, connection and personal growth alongside ongoing psychological difficulty.
The Implementation of Gratitude in Prosocial Behaviour
Deta has also contributed to research examining gratitude and prosocial behaviour among volunteers within a social community in Bandung.
This work reflects her broader interest in positive psychology, social connection, meaning and the psychological factors that influence how people relate to and support others.
Creative Strategies of Single Parents in Developing Children's Empathy During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Deta also contributed to research examining how single parents developed creative strategies to support children’s empathy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This work sits at the intersection of psychology, parenting, social development and adaptation during periods of major disruption.
It reflects an area that remains relevant well beyond the pandemic itself: how families help children develop emotional and interpersonal capacities during periods of uncertainty and stress.
Learning Motivation of High School Students During Online Learning
Another area of Deta’s academic work examined learning motivation among high-school students during online education in the COVID-19 period.
The sudden shift to remote learning created significant changes in structure, social interaction, motivation and educational engagement for young people.
This research complements Deta’s postgraduate expertise in Educational Psychology and her clinical work with students experiencing academic pressure, motivation difficulties and adjustment challenges.
The Dynamics of Online Learning and Children's Creativity
Deta has also contributed to work examining the impact of online learning on children’s creativity during the COVID-19 era.
This research adds to her broader academic focus on education, psychological development and the way environmental changes can influence young people’s learning and wellbeing.
Research and Clinical Practice
What is particularly valuable about Deta’s background is the connection between her academic and therapeutic work.
Her research has explored:
- subjective wellbeing
- bipolar disorder
- student mental health
- gratitude
- prosocial behaviour
- empathy
- parenting
- motivation
- education
- child development
- creativity
- adjustment during major social disruption
These are not disconnected from counselling.
They reflect many of the same themes that appear in therapy.
Identity.
Resilience.
Motivation.
Relationships.
Meaning.
Adaptation.
Wellbeing.
How people respond when circumstances change.
Deta brings that academic perspective into a therapeutic environment that remains firmly focused on the individual person.
Deta’s Approach at Empowering Awareness
Deta’s work at Empowering Awareness reflects our wider philosophy that psychological care should be individual, collaborative and grounded in the person’s actual experience.
A client does not need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong.
They do not need the perfect language.
And they do not need to fit neatly into a diagnostic category before counselling can begin.
Sometimes the starting point is simply:
“I am struggling.”
“I do not understand why I keep reacting this way.”
“I cannot stop thinking.”
“I have lost motivation.”
“My relationship has changed.”
“I do not know what I want anymore.”
Therapy creates space to begin making sense of that.
Deta combines psychological knowledge, therapeutic structure and a warm, non-judgmental approach to help clients develop greater awareness of what is happening and what might need to change.
Her work is ultimately about helping people move towards greater clarity, psychological flexibility, self-understanding and meaningful change.
